Complex Residue, No.1 (2020)

Avocado, muslin, wildfire smoke, redwood

42” x 45”

Complex Residue, No.2 (2020)

Avocado, wildfire smoke, muslin, redwood

31.5” x 50”

The CZU August Lightning Complex wildfire displaced my family from our home for seventeen days. During this time, I had left fabric dyed with avocado pits hanging outside to dry. The wildfire smoke transformed the salmon pink fabric to a muted brownish hue, an image that continues to fade and disappear over time. The painting functions as a traumatized object that bore direct witness to the fire through its presence. The traces that remain grow distant with each new day, a durational performance that will eventually come to an end.
